Immigration and finding a sense of home again
Where is home?
It can be anywhere in the world. As long as you get the feeling of belonging. Sometimes this happens by meeting new people you like, a surrounding or area that really feels comfortable to you or ….. you cannot exactly describe why you get that nice, warm fuzzy feeling.
We, a family from the Netherlands found our sense of home again after immigration to the South coast of Canada. Jos, Joyce and their daughters Tamara and Kelly started their own business and bought a motel.
All the challenges, adventures, patience, tears and laughter, fun and love made us realize that it does not matter where you are, as long as you feel good, mentally and physically and find your peace of mind.
We did not have time to unpack and put everything in place, because before we knew what was happening we were booked the first weekend. We were still looking for a lot of information and places where to get it.
If you ever need information or legal papers, 80% of this you will find on the website of the Canadian Government.
We assumed a lot of things to be the same in a new country. Not true. You do not take your sandwich with 'hagelslag' for lunch to work, you do not go grocery shopping by bike and also, social life is different.
Adventures about airports, crossing borders and dealing with (or without?) luggage are amazing and interesting. Lots of times we were asked at the border: Where is home?
Ofcourse I feel like saying:"Where the heart is". But that will not get you through Customs.
Some experiences we got about the maintenance of a building, home improvement, green cleaning, gardening in Canada, “minor” repairs, do-it-yourself and getting organized.
Another country also means going by buses to different schools dressed in uniform with lots of new rules. Hobbies like guides, twirling and ice-hockey, the Holidays, the winter and the summer (how about -20C and + 30C).
We consider ourselves blessed that we found our home in this beautiful area with two Lakes, a big river, beaches and The Falls which means people from all over the world come to visit, even some famous ones.
Of course this means also a lot of family, friends and…… lots of friends of friends came to visit.
